Are you dealing with a house fly infestation in Mississippi? These annoying pests can enter your home at any time and cause you frustration. The last thing you want is to spend an afternoon cooking in your kitchen while swatting flies out of your way.

House flies are relentless, carry germs, and almost impossible to catch it seems. Here you are in the comfort of your own home, minding your business when suddenly you hear it. There’s a faint “buzzing” noise, and it gets closer and closer.

You turn your head, and there it is! A pesky house fly buzzing around your head! You get up to swat it with your newspaper, remote, anything that you have on hand, but you’re not fast enough.

These things move fast! You then begin to notice that there isn’t only one fly. There are several flies in your home, and you believe you might have a house fly infestation.

How do you know if it’s an infestation? How do you rid your home of these insects? Here’s everything you need to know about dealing with a house fly infestation!

Signs Of A House Fly Infestation

How can you tell if your home is infested? The first sign is seeing multiple flies buzzing around your home. You could also see the flies larvae crawling around as well if you discover their breeding grounds.

If you haven’t seen any flies yet, then you might hear them. Their buzzing sound is quite loud, which warns you of their presence.

Ways House Flies Get Inside

House flies are attracted to your home for several reasons. One of the first reasons is the smells that come from inside your home. These could be both good and bad smells.

The smell of food cooking or placed on the table will attract these flies. The smell of garbage, pet feces, and other bad smells will attract them as well. House flies are also attracted to your home because of the heat.

During the winter, the flies will sense the heat in your home and want to enter. During the summer, the warmer air currents coming from your home will attract them as well. They find their way in when you open your doors or windows.

If there are holes in your screens or cracks in your weather stripping, they’ll take these as two opportunities to enter as well.

Removing Flies From Your Home

There are a few ways to remove flies from your home. You can try one way first and then move on to another way that might work better for you. You can also consider using several different methods at one time.

Here are a few ways to remove house flies to keep in mind.

1. Fly Sticks

Fly sticks are sticky strips of tape that you hang from the ceiling. The tape has a sweet smell and attracts the flies to it. When the flies land on the sticky tape, they’ll be stuck to it!

The best place to hang these fly sticks is by entryways. You can hang them in front of windows and doors that lead outdoors. The downfall of this technique is that it’s not very attractive to have trapped flies hanging from your ceiling, but it’s safe for your home.

2. Fly Traps

There are other forms of fly traps that are more aesthetically pleasing. These traps hang from your window and can come in the shape of butterflies. They have a small hole in them where bait is placed.

When the bait attracts the flies, the flies enter the hole and are then stuck inside. You won’t have to worry about guests seeing a bunch of dead flies hanging around and you won’t have to see them either. There are even some designed to be placed inside the soil of house plants.

If you have flies attracted to certain house plants, these traps will trap them before they get ahold of your plants.

3. Fly Swatters

A fly swatter is one of the oldest forms of removing flies from a house. It’s a great method that works well if you’re fast enough. Flies are able to move quite quickly so swatting one might seem difficult, but it’s possible.

However, if you have a house fly infestation, then swatting at each individual fly might become overwhelming.

4. Mason Jar Trap

You can create a fly trap without even having to go to the store. Take a few items that you most likely already have in your home and create a DIY fly trap. You’ll need a mason jar, paper, some tape, sugar, and water!

Roll the paper to create a funnel. Use the tape to keep it in its funnel shape. The widest part of the funnel should be about the same size as the opening of the mason jar.

The end of the funnel should be a small hole and should rest about halfway down the jar. Fill the jar 1/3 of the way with 2 parts sugar and 1 part water. Place the funnel in the jar but don’t allow the end of the funnel to touch the water.

Tape the funnel to the jar to keep it in place and set it in a warm spot in your home. When the flies crawl in, attracted to the sugar water, they’ll become stuck inside!

5. Good Sanitation Practices

One great way to keep flies out of your home without having to use any traps at all is to practice good sanitation. If you allow your kitchen and bathroom trashcans to overflow and sit a few days before taking them out, then they’ll most certainly attract house flies.

All trashcans in the home should also have lids on them to reduce the number of smells coming from it. Any foods not refrigerated should be kept covered and all spills should be cleaned right after the incident. Any pet litter boxes and feeding areas should be kept clean at all times as well.

6. Seal Entryways

If you’re noticing house flies entering your home, but you’re not sure how they’re getting in, then you need to seal all possible entryways. Flies enter through opened doors, windows, vents, and other openings. The best thing you can do is ensure that all of these points are sealed off from insects in general.

When not using your doors, windows, or vents, be sure to keep them closed. All screens on doors and windows should be in good shape. If there are any holes or tears, repair to replace the screens.

You can screen your vent openings to prevent them from entering through the vents.

7. UV Light Traps

UV light traps pull the flies in and then zap them! When using this type of trap for indoor purposes, be sure to place it in an area where the flies cannot see it from outside. If they can see it from outside, then it’ll attract them inside.

You should also place the UV light trap at five feet above the ground or lower. You don’t want it to be near other sources of light or sources of food as the flies might choose to go to these other attractive locations instead.

Once you find a good spot, set it in place and let it do its magic!

8. Professional Pest Services

Dealing with a house fly infestation can be a lot of work. You need to know how these flies operate to truly end the infestation. When other methods don’t seem to do the trick for you, call a professional pest service.

Professionals will know exactly what you’re dealing with and how to correct it with ease. Placing the work in their hands also gives you peace of mind. You won’t have to worry if you’re doing something the right way or not and you’ll get your home back.
